Lights

The moon sits on a street pole,
A sterile halo stark in my window.
Stares unstartled as I kill an artificial sun and call it a night.

Celestial bodies as gods have died;
Born again as innovations in our image.
We demoted Light because we love darkness
Indentured it to the status of ideology
An electric shout at the heavens, louder than stars.
Kill heaven and call it a night.

Number your Thoughts

Number your thoughts if you are able.
They are birds; here and there and gone again.
They are dust; motes suspended in sunny shafts before sinking to the floor.
Number your thoughts because you can’t count the hours until they wake.
They wake in your welling tears, and you vomit them in your anger.
They are snowflakes; singular, storm-tossed, sobbing in the blizzard’s blank
tresses before they blanket you.

Number your thoughts if you are able,
If you can see beyond their swollen faces,
Swirling in a kaleidoscope’s false universe.
Number your thoughts, if you can fit them all on the walls of your tortured journal,
Or drown them in the speeding digital space.
They are words, no one really means them but they hurt still.
They are a shoreless sea of soldiers to be drained in the draught of death.

Desert Moon

Oh desert Moon! I’m leaving you
To arid stretches of opal sky,
To wail your diamonds and wonder why
Though I once shared your solitude,
Would drown in the sea that I once cruised
To seize a pearl of greater price
And sail through dreams in her dreamboat eyes.

So seed the twilight with your tears
And count your isolation dear.
Choke the sun’s last gasp of light
And mourn for me in guise of night;
Let another court your silver kiss
Or return as reclusive Artemis.

The Dark

The dark might flicker and reflect
Keen glints;

The dark might cloister and secure
Bleak folks;

And dark could leak warmth and quilt their
Curses;

The dark is a snake that caresses,
Constricts;

The dark chokes out our coughs while licking
Each croak;

The dark cries inky tears that
Bleed broken.

The dark screams from its corner,
scoured by Light.
